A new study suggests that a popular, widely used acid reflux medication might cause heart attacks in people with high blood pressure.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, compared heart attacks and deaths in people with high blood pressure after taking Nexium, an acid-reflux medication commonly used to treat heartburn and acid reflux.
In the study, researchers compared the risk of heart attacks or strokes in people taking Nexium to those taking a placebo. They found a higher risk of heart attacks in people taking Nexium, which is known to reduce the acid produced in the stomach.
The researchers also found a lower risk of heart attacks in people taking Nexium, which is known to increase the risk of heart attack in people with high blood pressure.
“Our findings suggest that taking Nexium may be a possible and potentially safe treatment for people with high blood pressure who have heart attacks or strokes,” said study lead author Dr. Amy Bremmer, professor of medical sciences and director of the research center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The study was funded by Novo Nordisk, a Swedish company.

Jane Smith, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, said the study’s findings suggest that people with high blood pressure may need to take other medications to reduce their blood pressure. But, she said, “it’s important to use a medication like Nexium as a safe and effective treatment for high blood pressure.”
