Nexium (esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that is used to treat frequent heartburn, acid reflux, and heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can also be used for other conditions such as heartburn and peptic ulcers.
The long-term relief of heartburn and other symptoms of frequent heartburn is a long-term treatment option for people who have not responded to the medication for heartburn and other symptoms. The long-term use of Nexium is only indicated for people with frequent heartburn who have not responded to other treatments.
Esomeprazole is the active ingredient in Nexium and is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It belongs to a class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). This medication can help to reduce the frequency of heartburn. The medication works by stopping acid production in the stomach.
Nexium (esomeprazole) is a prescription medication used to treat heartburn. Patients taking Nexium (esomeprazole) have been shown to have a greater than a 90% reduction in heartburn episodes over two weeks when they take it. They are also much more likely to develop acid reflux, a more serious condition.
Nexium is available as a single-dose (4-5 mg) capsule or as a two-dose (2 mg) oral capsule. The oral capsule is a smaller version of the capsule that is used to treat GERD, and can be taken with food or with a meal. The oral capsule has a lower absorption rate than the four-day capsule that is used to treat acid reflux.
The oral capsule is usually taken before or after meals. The capsules can be taken with or without food. The oral capsule does not contain fat and does not protect the stomach from the stomach's acid. Patients should take Nexium (esomeprazole) at least one hour before or two hours after a meal.
The two-dose oral capsule is a higher dose of the medication that is taken once or twice daily as a single dose. It can be taken with or without food, or once daily in the morning. Patients should take Nexium at least two times daily.
Nexium can be taken with or without food. If gastric acid is being taken with Nexium, patients should take it at least one hour before or after eating. The oral capsule may also be taken with food to reduce stomach upset. Patients should not take Nexium without telling them before taking the medication.
Patients should not take Nexium for more than three days. The medication should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after taking a meal.
Nexium is not recommended for patients who have had heartburn to increase their risk of developing an eating disorder.

Do not increase the dose or frequency without consulting your healthcare provider.
Dosage should not be changed or administered without consulting your healthcare provider, as it may cause serious or even life-threatening side effects. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
